We are eager to support researchers in their endeavors to bring solutions for patients.

Our grantmaking approach is rooted in 3 key values: agility, impact and comprehensive support.

Grants that are open to application

Please find below information about grants and fellowships from the association that are open to application. For all grants, both early career and experienced researchers are encouraged to apply, and consideration will be given to all proposals meeting the selection criteria. Candidates from all countries are invited to apply. To be noted: projects linked to high-risk states or territories, or conflict zones are subject to additional in-depth background research.

PhD and Post-Doctoral Grants, also known as the “Paul Pettavino” or “Philippe Ferreyrolles” Fellowships

Our association seeks to empower the next generation of researchers through doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships. These grants enable emerging scientists to explore the root causes of DMD, as well as its related life and health complications. Each year, we anticipate awarding up to 7 new grantees.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD Program or hold a postdoctoral position at a recognized university or research institution
  • Research must be focused on Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) or closely related field

Examples of requested documents:

  • Current resume of applicant
  • Project proposal including objectives and hypothesis, preliminary results if applicable (3-4 pages maximum not including illustrations, figures, appendixes and references)
  • A letter of support from the applicant’s academic supervisor or research advisor, confirming their role

Research Grants for Operational Costs on DMD, also referred to as the “Adrien-Tanaphum Ferré” Grant

The association recognizes that some research projects face significant operational hurdles that can delay their launch or impact their progress. This grant exists to allow scientists and researchers to be able to focus on research while covering essential operational costs, including funding for labs, equipment, and other critical tools.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be affiliated with a recognized university, research institution or hospital conducting research in DMD or other neuromuscular disorder
  • The request should aim to cover essential operational needs such as staff, lab equipment, and research materials that directly support a research study.

Examples of requested documents:

  • Current resume of applicant with references and publications
  • Letter explaining the request, the context, and the goal of the study or project (1 page)
  • Project presentation including objectives and hypothesis, preliminary results if applicable (3-4 pages maximum not including illustrations, figures, appendixes and references)

Advancing Patient Mobility (Equipment)

The association also occasionally funds projects that aim to improve the quality of life for patients through the development of innovative equipment. This includes supporting research into better wheelchairs and other assistive technologies that enhance mobility and independence for individuals living with DMD and other neuromuscular disorders. We believe that investing in such solutions can have a transformative impact on their day-to-day lives. If you believe you have a project that could fall in this category and could be of interest to the association, please reach out with a project pitch in any form you judge relevant (written, video…).

The Pioneers grants (to be launched in 2025)

In 2025, the association will be launching a new, ambitious grant to support innovative research projects and clinical developments aimed at transforming DMD research and patient care. With funding starting at €500,000 per project, this grant is designed to attract “high risk, high gain” projects. While the primary focus is on DMD, we also welcome research into other neuromuscular disorders that can contribute to a deeper understanding of DMD and potentially lead to new therapeutic insights for the disease. We are open to both early-stage and advanced clinical developments that embody cutting-edge ideas.

More details on the grant and its application requirements will be published in Q1 2025.

Selection process and general criteria

If you wish to apply for a grant, please send an email to grants@onlyproject.com, including your project title, a short summary (5-7 sentences), country, and your budget. You will then receive the relevant application form. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Our team speaks both French and English, however most application documents will be requested in English.

For all grants, both early career and experienced researchers are encouraged to apply, and consideration will be given to all proposals meeting the selection criteria. Candidates from all countries are invited to apply. To be noted: projects linked to high-risk states or territories, or conflict zones are subject to additional in-depth background research.

Once submitted, all applications will be reviewed by the Programs Officer. Eligible applications will then be evaluated either by the Scientific Advisory Board or experts from the association’s ecosystem, as well as the Board of directors, based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance to the association’s mission
  • Overall project quality and scientific soundness
  • Demonstration of strong research experience and laboratory expertise
  • Feasibility
  • A detailed and coherent budget.

Applicants can expect to receive a response within approximately 3 months (except for the “Pioneers Grant”, which will follow a different timeline).

Exceptional Support

The association’s focus will always be on scientific research, but we also offer ad-hoc support on a case-by-case basis. This is not part of the regular grant process and represents a small portion of the overall grantmaking (approximately 2%).

Patients and families help

We can help patients and families with specific and essential needs, such as funding for equipment or car adaptations that significantly improve a patient’s quality of life. Please contact us directly if you need support, and we will evaluate the request accordingly.

Supporting cultural change

We also wish to offer ad-hoc support for projects that promote education and awareness about DMD through cultural mediums. This includes funding for documentaries, books, and other creative initiatives aimed at increasing public understanding of the condition. If you have a project that promotes DMD awareness through cultural or educational channels, please reach out to us for consideration.
